Wooden menu cards use a thin wood or ply panel as a cover or as the menu board itself, with printed or laser-engraved branding. A material that has to match the room
Wood is the least flexible menu material we work with, and that is exactly why it works when it works. It cannot be subtle. In a glamping resort, a farm-to-table restaurant or a craft brewery it reads as completely intentional. In a bright modern café it reads as a prop.
So the first conversation is never about the wood. It is about whether the room already has timber in it — tables, cladding, shelving. If it does, a wooden menu extends something that is already there. If it does not, the menu becomes the only wooden object in the space and looks like it wandered in.
Two different products
Wooden covers work like leather ones — a panel front and back, screw-post or ring bound, holding printed inners you can replace. This is the practical option for a menu with real page count.
Solid wooden boards are the menu itself, with content engraved or printed directly onto the surface. They look superb and they are effectively permanent, so they only suit content that genuinely does not change — a drinks list, a fixed tasting menu, a counter board with categories rather than prices.
What to plan for
- Weight. Noticeably heavier than leather. Fine at a seated table; poor for a queue.
- Table space. Thicker than any card menu, so it needs somewhere to rest.
- Variation. Wood grain differs panel to panel. That is a feature, but it means no two covers are identical.
- Humidity. Not suitable for poolside or exposed outdoor seating.

Quick answers
Can the menu content be engraved directly into the wood?
Yes, on solid board menus. Bear in mind it is permanent — engraved content cannot be updated, so it only suits a fixed list. Anything with prices that move should be printed inners in a wooden cover instead.
Will every menu look the same?
No. Wood grain varies between panels, so a set of covers will have visible differences. Most venues that choose wood want that; if you need perfect consistency across many copies, leather or synthetic is the better answer.
Can wooden menus be cleaned?
Wiped, yes. Soaked, no. If the menu is going anywhere near water or heavy condensation, use waterproof stock instead.
