Menu card design for dessert shops

Desserts sell on the photograph. Everything else on the card is supporting cast.

Aveera Design Solutions designs and prints menu cards for dessert shops, ice cream parlours and waffle and shake counters. Dessert menus are photography-led, because the image does the selling. We produce them as rigid-board display menus, counter cards and laminated single pages. Mr Dessert in Kothrud, Pune is a live project.

The image is the menu

Almost no one orders a dessert from a written description. They order the thing that looked best. That inverts the normal hierarchy of menu design: instead of photography supporting the text, the text exists to name and price what the photograph already sold.

It also means image quality is not negotiable in the way it is elsewhere. A mediocre photograph of a curry can still sell it, because the name carries recognition. A mediocre photograph of a sundae actively costs you the sale — it says the real thing looks like that.

This is the one category where we will tell a venue not to proceed until the photography is right. We retouch and place images, and we will say clearly when a shot is not strong enough to print at size.

Display before handheld

Mr Dessert's menu is a rigid-board panel on an easel outside the shop, not a card handed to a seated guest. That is typical of the category — the decision is frequently made before anyone sits down, on the pavement or at the counter, which means the primary menu is a display object. Rigid board, large format, read at two or three metres.

The handheld card, if there is one, is secondary and mostly carries variants and add-ons: scoop counts, toppings, sizes.

FAQ

Quick answers

Do we need professional photography?

For desserts, effectively yes. It is the category where the image does the selling outright. We retouch and place photography, and we will tell you honestly when a shot is not good enough to print large — we do not shoot food ourselves.

Gloss or matte for a dessert menu?

Gloss, in almost every case. It gives photography more contrast and saturation, which is exactly what this category needs. The fingerprint downside matters less on a display board than on a handheld card.

Should the menu be outside or at the counter?

Outside, if you have pavement traffic. Most dessert decisions are made before entering. An easel or A-frame board works harder than anything inside the shop.

Running a dessert shop?

Send your item list and tell us how the menu gets used during service. Format and material come out of that conversation.
